Para resolver uno de los grandes problemas de su tiempo, Alan Turing propuso una imaginaria máquina de calcular programable. Sin embargo, la idea de producir una «máquina Turing» no cuajó hasta que Turing consiguió descifrar el código Enigma de los nazis, permitiendo así la victoria de los Aliados durante la segunda guerra mundial. Con la idea de su máquina, Turing se convirtió en el paladín de la inteligencia artificial, formulando el célebre Test de Turing, que pone en cuestión nuestras nociones simples sobre la conciencia humana. Sin embargo, los trabajos de Turing durante la posguerra se vieron truncados cuando, en su calidad de homosexual declarado en una época en que la homosexualidad era oficialmente ilegal en Inglaterra, fue detenido por las autoridades y condenado a someterse a un «tratamiento» que venía a ser una castración química y que le condujo al suicidio.
