Author Biography

Sodei Rinjiro is professor emeritus at Hosei University in Tokyo. Born in 1932 in rural Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan, he holds masters degrees in political science from Waseda University in Tokyo and from UCLA, where he studied for six years in the early 1960s. After returning to Japan he worked as a freelance writer and lecturer in American politics. Sodei is considered Japan's leading scholar of MacArthur, and he has published several additional studies of MacArthur and the occupation. He retired from Hosei in 1999 and lives in Tokyo with his wife, Takako John Junkerman, a filmmaker and writer, lives in Tokyo. His film, Hellfire: A Journey from Hiroshima (coproduced with John Dower) was nominated for an Academy Award
