New diagnostic criteria are explained, and the bewildering range of new pills, insulins and gadgets are clearly discussed with help in choosing the right one for your patient. There are detailed sections on helping patients to manage diabetes in every day life - eating, exercise, work and travel. There is extensive advice on the monitoring and adjustment of glucose levels, and how to prevent and cope with emergencies, whether in the GP's surgery or the intensive care unit. This book focuses particularly on the prevention, detection and treatment of diabetic tissue damage, including heart disease. Less well-recognised but important tissue damage and its management is also included. Rowan Hillson MBE MD FRCP, Consultant Physician, Diabetes and Endocrine Unit, Hillingdon Hospital, Uxbridge, UK

Dr Rowan Hillson, MBE, MD, FRCP was appointed Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Endocrinology, and General Internal Medicine at The Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge, UK in 1989. She led the diabetes team, and the project to establish Diabeticare, an internationally-recognised diabetes centre; and chaired the Hillingdon Consensus Care Diabetes Project, working district-wide with health care professionals and people with diabetes to produce local guidelines for diabetes care. She was elected to the national committee of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists in 2006. Dr Hillson will continue to work part-time at The Hillingdon Hospital as a diabetologist and on-call physician.
Dr Hillson graduated from Birmingham in 1974. She established the British Diabetes Association/Outward Bound courses for people with diabetes in 1981 - a worldwide first and ran 30 courses in 15 years.
