A string of strange events is started because of a most unusual will left by the multimillionaire Ted Maxell, head of the Maxell Law firm. In it he requires that his son Jerry Maxell must produce a male heir prior to his 35th birthday in order to inherit Ted's vast wealth.When Jerry's wife becomes pregnant he is elated. But when the baby is born just before Jerry's birthday nobody is prepared for the child's gender. It is not female, but it is not male either. It is a hermaphrodite who is eventually named Roderick. While Jerry schemes madly to have the sex of the child altered, Maxell family members and those associated with them begin to die.First it is Harry Menthol, Ted's closest associate who is also suspected of being in a hostile takeover of the huge, prestigious Maxell Law firm. Mary Maxell, Ted's widow and suspected lover of Menthol, murders him in cold blood. She also kills Michelle Stewart, Ted's mistress.Then several associates of Aveeno Jerigan, the head of a rival law firm who is plotting the hostile takeover of the Maxell Law firm are killed. Aveeno himself then commits suicide because of his inability to conclude a contract involving the firm. The demise of Mary Maxell herself as well as eventually Jerry Maxell, his wife Annie and their children, soon follows.It seems that the Prince of Darkness, Satan, has made contracts with most of these people, which would involve keeping the dark secrets of the Maxell family. The Maxells are an old prestigious Southern family once heavily involved with slave holdings.There is a prophecy too. It says that an heir will be born who will be the Chosen One and it will be a hermaphrodite who will continue on as the Devil's representative.Eventually everything comes to light but by then almost all of the players, except George Webster, Jerry's biological father, have met an awful fate.
