In 1979 Tim O'Brien received the National Book Award in fiction for Going After Cacciato. The title story from The Things They Carried won a National Magazine Award; the novel itself, published in 1990, was chosen by the editors of The New York Times Book Review as one of the best books of the year. In the Lake of the Woods was also selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the best books of 1994, and by Time magazine as the best work of fiction in 1994. It received the 1995 Cooper Prize awarded by the Society of American Historians for the best novel on an historical theme. A native of Worthington, Minnesota, O'Brien graduated in 1968 from Macalester College in St. Paul. He served as a foot soldier in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970, after which he pursued graduate studies in Government at Harvard University, then later worked as a national affairs reporter for The Washington Post. He now lives in Massachusetts.
