Author Biography

Tundra writer and illustrator MIREILLE LEVERT was born in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. By age twelve, Levert decided to be an artist. She received her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal, and later continued to study to be an art teacher. Her artistic career has taken many turns. Levert has been a painter, a teacher of batik, an assistant bookseller, and a window dresser. Since 1975, she has illustrated children’s books and magazine articles. Her artwork has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, France, Italy, and Japan, and has won numerous international awards, including the Governor General’s Literary Award for Illustration. Levert continues to live in Montreal, where she enjoys all the arts: music, dance, movies, theater, and sculpture.

Tundra’s JOSÉE MASSE grew up in an artistic household. Her father was a painter and many of her dearest memories are of spending time with him in his studio. She studied graphic arts in Montreal, and worked as a graphic designer for three years before beginning a career in illustration. Josée Masse lives near Montreal where she spends most of her time in her studio.
